Can you wear black in a headshot?

You absolutely can where black in a headshot, although there are a few things to consider. The point of your headshot is that you stand out, so with that in mind:

• if you have darker skin tones and you want to wear black, in my opinion, you would most likely need to make sure your background is bright. There are exceptions to every rule of course, but as a general notion, a lighter background would give the image more balance.

• bring options with a great neckline, ideally that shows some skin. Balance is important in the image, too much black could feel just too dark. Bring a few different black options to see what works the best.

• pick a photographer that shoots people in black and knows how to make that work.

• bring other non-black options just in case. Try not to be too married to one idea/outfit. Everyone is different and different things look better on different people.

• bring things to layer over the black garment, like a jean jacket for instance.
